Finding Closure: Lai Peng’s Journey of Healing from Delayed Grief

Lai Peng found her voice to grief after the passing of her husband with counselling from the HCSA SPIN Care Team, and the strength to help her young neurodivergent son with his own grief as well. Together, mother and son have grown closer in their shared delayed grief and healing. Read more about Lai Peng’s journey to reach out for support and find closure from her family’s unresolved grief.

A Journey of Loss and Resilience

Nine years ago, Lai Peng’s life changed irrevocably when her husband passed away from cancer. Left to care for their 18-month-old son, who was born with Down Syndrome and faced numerous health challenges, she found herself navigating a path of immense grief and responsibility.

Balancing the roles of grieving wife and devoted mother, she masked her pain from those around her. Her family, unaware of the emotional toll, assumed she was coping well. Yet beneath the surface, Lai Peng struggled with the weight of her responsibilities and the isolation of her journey.

The Breaking Point: Seeking Help

The Covid-19 lockdown magnified her challenges, leaving her emotionally drained and struggling to cope with her son’s growing curiosity about the absence of a father figure. Desperate for support, she sought help from another non-profit organisation but found their resources unable to meet her son’s specific needs.

It was through the recommendation of another single mother that she discovered HCSA SPIN. The understanding and flexibility of support from the SPIN Care Team marked a turning point, offering her the opportunity to receive counselling sessions at home, an arrangement that accommodated her son’s special needs and her limited mobility.

Finding Hope and Connection

Initially, opening up was difficult for Lai Peng. The weight of her grief and the years of silence had created barriers she wasn’t sure she could overcome. Yet, over months of counselling, she began to find her voice.

These sessions allowed her to address her son’s questions about his father with honesty and compassion. Instead of brushing aside the topic, she started to share simple but heartfelt explanations, helping her son understand that his father’s love for him remained steadfast, even in his absence.

A New Chapter of Empowerment

With the help of the SPIN Care Team, Lai Peng’s son also began receiving tailored grief counselling. The sessions not only supported his emotional growth but also strengthened their bond as mother and son.
