Father’s Day 2021: “Six Years to Win My Family’s Hearts Back”

This Father's Day, we celebrate the inspiring journey towards recovery of Kim Sun, an alumnus from HCSA Highpoint Halfway House.

The most heartbreaking incident and regrettable moment in my life was when my father had to kneel in front of me, begging me to be a better person.

(Translation) “I’ve told my mother countless times, ‘I owe you too much.” Being naïve, I chased fame and ran away to join unlawful societies at 17 years old. My parents, who doted on me so much, found me only when I got caught by the police. The most heartbreaking incident and regrettable moment in my life was when my father had to kneel in front of me, begging me to be a better person.

When my mum visited me in prison, she said that due to her ailing health, it might be the last time I see her. I got really scared, because I didn’t get to bid goodbye when my wife passed on either. My family was too disappointed to bail me out back then, but I don’t blame them at all.

It took me six years to rebuild my relationship with them, and they all say that I’ve changed for the better. Most importantly, my mum feels happier than winning the lottery! I thank the Lord for giving me the chance to be a filial son and atone for my mistakes.

My son always transfers money to my account as he’s afraid I don’t have enough. But I returned his money and told him that I don’t drink or smoke anymore, and I have savings from my job now. ‘Dad, we’re impressed—you’ve really changed,’ said my son.

If others have riches and wealth, I’ll be happy for them. Why compare? Instead, being contented with what you have will bring you happiness and peace too.”
